League of Legends 101 & Overview
Breaking down the game and the basics around League of Legends
Many League fans play League adjacent games or game modes outside of the ‘pro’ or ranked matchmaking
Music is a massive part of this community. Each Worlds song has over 100 million plays on Spotify with K/DA’s POP/STARS at over a half a billion views on YouTube.
Arcane is one of the most watched Netflix shows in history.
THE GAME ITSELF
The map has three main lanes and there are two bases in each corner. You win by destroying the enemy base. There are turrets around the map highlighted in the circles that attack characters for going in range of them and need to be taken down to progress.
THE ROLES IN THE GAME
WHAT ELSE IS IN A GAME OF LEAGUE?
The game’s cycle is around winning battles, earning gold, and buying items, which allows you to win more battles.
Minions are computer controlled and advance from each team’s base out along the lanes. They spawn every 30 seconds in waves of 6-7. They have various types, and they give gold for the last person to attack them. You can also use them to tank turrets and destroy turrets
Neutral bosses are extremely important to winning.
Baron fights are usually the turning point for a game.
HOW TO WATCH LEAGUE
This is the basic screen for a pro League of Legends match
Kills: More kills means they are usually ahead, but this might not always be the case so its important to assess other factors, such as gold.
Gold: The red team’s gold has been circled in red. Now this can be an indicator of which team might be ahead, as the more gold a team has, more items and more powerful the characters become
Health bar: During a fight, the health bars indicate health. These are the red and blue horizontal bars that sit above the champion’s heads. Depending on how healthy a champion is, this tells us which team is dealing more damage and may be close to death. Don’t worry, after dying, the characters do respawn, but they have to wait a short period of time before they can do so. If you want to see if a player is dead, you can look at the team stats on the outer borders of the overlay.
Team stats: Shows all players on either team as well as the champion they are playing with health bar of all players, including those who have died in battle
Map: Shows the progress a team has made in sieging an enemy base, so if they’ve destroyed defense structures, and also the position of the fights. The white rectangle is telling us where the camera is currently focused on the map. If an opponent is pushing into an enemy team’s base, its an indication that they are ahead and on the offensive, just one step closer to destroying the enemy nexus
